How to make a banner in Minecraft
A banner is crafted from six wool of one colour and a stick; the wool colour becomes the base. Patterns are added in a loom: place the banner and a dye, add a banner pattern item for some designs, and pick the pattern. Each pattern is a new layer on top of the previous ones, so layer order changes the result.
The preview is built from the game's own textures the same way Minecraft does it: cloth shading, semi-transparent pattern edges, and layer order match what you will see on the wall. Layer names match the in-game item tooltip.

How many patterns can a banner have?
A loom applies up to six patterns in both Java and Bedrock. In Java, /give can create a banner that shows up to 16 layers; the item tooltip lists the first six. Bedrock banners never have more than six layers.
Which patterns need a banner pattern item?
Ten of them: Field Masoned, Bordure Indented, Flower, Creeper, Skull, Thing, Globe, Snout, Flow, and Guster. Six items are crafted from paper, the Globe is sold by a master cartographer, the Snout is found in bastion remnant chests, and Flow and Guster drop from trial chamber vaults. The loom does not use up the pattern item.
How do I put a banner design on a shield?
Combine the shield and the banner in a crafting grid and the patterns move onto the shield. The shield face is smaller — 10 by 20 pixels versus 20 by 40 on a banner — so the same design looks different; preview it in the editor's Shield tab.
How do I remove a layer or copy a banner?
Use the banner on a cauldron with water to wash off the top layer. To copy a design, combine the patterned banner with a blank banner of the same colour in a crafting grid and you get two identical banners.
Does the banner /give command work in Bedrock?
No. The editor's command targets Java 1.20.5 and newer, where patterns are set with the banner_patterns component. Bedrock cannot set patterns through /give, so build the banner in a loom — the editor lists the steps too.
