The farther apart the throws, the more precise the answer.

Throw an eye, aim at it while it hovers, and press F3+C — paste the copied line into the throw field. Or copy X, Z, and the first number of the Facing line.

How to find a stronghold with Eyes of Ender

An Eye of Ender always flies toward the nearest stronghold, but a single throw does not tell you the distance. You need two throws from different spots: each gives a line, and the stronghold is where the lines cross. The wider the angle between them, the more precise the answer, so move sideways from the first spot rather than forward.

The calculator estimates the spread: an aim off by just 0.2° moves the answer by tens of blocks at a thousand-block range. When the spread is under half a chunk, the point snaps to the chunk corner and the calculator shows the exact entrance staircase. Otherwise walk to the point and throw again — a third throw refines the answer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the End portal?

Throw an Eye of Ender: it flies about 12 blocks toward the nearest stronghold. Note the spot and direction, move 200–500 blocks to the side, and throw again. The two directions cross at the stronghold, and the End portal is inside it.

Why does the calculator show a staircase instead of the portal room?

The eye leads to the chunk holding the entrance spiral staircase, the stronghold's first room — specifically to that chunk's north-west corner. The staircase centre is always 4 blocks east and south of the corner. The portal room is in the same stronghold, further along the corridors.

How many Eyes of Ender do I need?

The portal has 12 frames, each with a 10% chance of already holding an eye; about 28% of strongholds have none filled. Bring 12 for the portal plus 2–3 for throwing, since a thrown eye breaks 20% of the time.

How do I record the direction precisely in Java?

While the eye hovers, aim your crosshair at it and press F3+C: the clipboard gets a command with your coordinates and camera rotation, which you can paste straight into the throw field. Otherwise copy X, Z, and the first number of the Facing line on the F3 screen.

Where are strongholds without using eyes?

In Java, 128 strongholds sit in 8 rings around the world centre; the nearest ring holds 3 strongholds 1,280–2,816 blocks from X 0, Z 0. Bedrock has no rings: strongholds are scattered across the world at least 160 blocks from the centre.
