Craft the stars first: gunpowder, dyes, and optionally a shape, trail, or twinkle ingredient. Fade is added to a finished star with a second craft. Then put the stars into the rocket recipe with paper and gunpowder — more gunpowder means a higher burst. For a show, line up dispensers loaded with rockets and fire them with a button or a redstone clock.

How do you make fireworks for elytra?
Paper and one to three gunpowder on a crafting table, with no stars — the craft makes 3 rockets. Gunpowder sets the flight duration: the boost lasts 1.3, 1.8, and 2.3 seconds on average. A rocket with stars explodes when used in flight and hurts the player.
How high does a firework rocket fly?
A rocket speeds up every tick and explodes at the end of a slightly random lifetime. With one gunpowder it bursts about 16 blocks up on average (10 to 23), with two about 29, and with three about 47 blocks above the launch point.
How much damage does a firework deal from a crossbow?
Five points plus two per star to the target; anyone within 5 blocks takes less the farther away they are. The most stars fit with one gunpowder: 7 stars deal 19 damage, 9.5 hearts. A rocket without stars deals no damage.
How do you make a creeper-shaped or star-shaped firework?
The shape comes from an extra ingredient in the star recipe: a fire charge makes a large ball, a gold nugget a star, a feather a burst, and any mob head a creeper face. Without one you get a small ball. A diamond adds a trail and glowstone dust a twinkle.
How many colors can one star have?
Up to eight: in the 3×3 grid one slot goes to gunpowder and the rest to dyes and extras, so with a shape, trail, and twinkle five are left. Fade colors are added separately: the finished star plus up to eight dyes.
