How villager trading works
A villager takes its profession from a job site block: a lectern makes a librarian, a blast furnace an armorer, a grindstone a weaponsmith. Every profession has five levels, from Novice to Master. At each level the game picks two trades from the list (three for a master librarian), and the next level unlocks once the villager gains enough experience from your trades: 10, 70, 150, and 250 points.
A trade's price is the base price plus demand and your reputation. For books and enchanted gear the base price is rolled when the trade appears: a book costs 2 + a random number + 3 emeralds per enchantment level, and treasures such as Mending cost twice as much. Demand then raises the price when a trade is bought out often, while reputation and Hero of the Village lower it. How strongly is set by the trade's multiplier: 0.2 for books, armor, tools, and maps, and 0.05 for everything else.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get villager discounts?
Cure a zombie villager: hit it with a Splash Potion of Weakness and give it a golden apple. Its prices for you then drop by 25 emeralds on strong-discount trades — books, armor, tools, weapons, maps — and by 6 on the rest, never below one item. Part of that reputation fades over time, settling at 20 and 5. Curing the same villager again adds nothing. Hero of the Village from a won raid takes off another 30–55%.
Where can I buy a Mending book?
From a librarian: from Novice to Expert it can offer a random book out of 40 enchantments, Mending included. Mending is a treasure, so it costs twice as much as a normal level I book — 10 to 38 emeralds. If you dislike the offers and nobody has traded yet, break and replace the lectern. With the Villager Trade Rebalance experiment only a swamp master librarian sells Mending.
How do I reroll a villager's trades?
As long as nobody has traded with the villager, break its job site block and place it again: it loses the profession, takes it back, and picks new trades. After the first trade the offers are locked for good; new ones only unlock with levels.
How many times can I use one trade?
Each trade has its own limit — from 1 to 16 uses, usually 12 or 16. After that it locks until the villager restocks at its job site, up to twice a day. Buying out a trade often raises demand and pushes the price up.
What is a villager type and what does it change?
The type comes from the biome where the villager spawned: plains, desert, jungle, savanna, snow, swamp, or taiga. In the normal game it decides the cartographer's maps: a jungle temple map, for example, is sold by desert, savanna, and swamp villagers. With the Villager Trade Rebalance experiment it also decides librarian books and armorer gear.
