Fortune vs Silk Touch: Choosing a Pickaxe
Fortune increases eligible block drops; Silk Touch preserves the block itself. Two separate pickaxes are useful for mining.

Fortune for resource gathering
Fortune III is useful when you want resources from eligible ores rather than the ore block itself. It affects diamonds, coal, redstone and other eligible drops, but does not apply one universal multiplier to every material. Do not expect triple drops from every break. Check whether a particular block supports Fortune; ancient debris, for example, does not produce extra debris through Fortune.
Silk Touch for preserving blocks
Silk Touch preserves eligible blocks in their original form. It is useful for taking ore home, collecting glass and recovering certain building materials. It does not make every block obtainable: a normal Silk Touch pickaxe cannot collect a spawner. Use the correct tool type too. Mining speed and whether a block drops at all are not determined by the enchantment alone.
Why carry two pickaxes?
You can collect ore with Silk Touch, then place it at home and break it with Fortune. The first step yields no bonus resources; Fortune applies during the second break. This lets you postpone processing until you obtain Fortune III while keeping a separate tool for building blocks. Both pickaxes can use Mending and Unbreaking because those enchantments do not conflict with either mining option.
Diamond or netherite pickaxe
Choose Fortune or Silk Touch based on the task, not the pickaxe material. Both options work on diamond and netherite pickaxes. Avoid adding unnecessary anvil history through unplanned intermediate combinations: prepare books at the required levels and compare the order for a fresh item. The plans below use a Java netherite pickaxe; equivalent book transfers to a fresh diamond pickaxe have the same costs.
Ready builds and anvil costs
Java 26.2. Fresh item and one fresh book at the required level per enchantment. No renaming or repairs. Costs are levels, not XP points.

Fortune III if you want diamonds now. Silk Touch if you need the ore block or want to process it later with another pickaxe.
