How to obtain
Since Java 26.1, a name tag is crafted from paper and any metal nugget; the wandering trader can also sell one. Current Bedrock uses the equivalent recipe.
Primary use
First assign a name on an anvil, then use the tag on a mob. A named mob displays that label and is generally protected from natural despawning.
Important mechanics
The tag is consumed on use. Several special names trigger visual Easter eggs without changing the mob's core combat mechanics.
