The target item goes on the left and the donor item or book goes on the right. Order affects the final cost.
Prior-work penalty
After a combination, the new penalty is 2 × the larger input penalty + 1. Renaming alone does not increase it. Pairing books is not a universal rule: the order depends on enchantment transfer costs and both inputs' histories.
